About

Artist Statement for Samuel Gillis

Classical painting techniques acquired from master artist, Eddwin Meyers. My style encompasses modern art, landscape, still life and figurative artworks which are often done in a realistic style. As an example, one of the many painting techniques I have used is a 17th century Renaissance or Verdossio technique which means Green Earth.

My goals are to take my fine art paintings to a level not seen, with my style of painting using a different approach.  Incorporating layers and high texture, using my many years of experience my subject matter for my art has developed a more personal and abstracted form.

My vision is an abstract modern painting with is still representational and the main focus is the figure. At times I want to portray everyday life as I see it using my newly self taught techniques of a modern contemporary artist.

I want to tighten my painting further and explore the intricacies of these varied techniques to the fullest. Creating art in it many forms without restrictions and ideals of others with the freedom to explore the intricacies in my fine art techniques and inner spirit is very freeing and an exciting statement that an artist can make.

Biography of fine art artist Samuel Gillis

My venture into art began when I was fourteen, making cartoon pictures until I was eighteen. From 1990 to 1994, attended Columbia College where I met fine art painter professor Eddwin Meyers who offered more of the style and freedom college atmosphere did not offer. His studio located on the North Side of Chicago. The Atelier Alternative; where he taught classical painting techniques with professionalism and an overall way of thinking as an artist.

He was hesitant to teach the techniques of master painters, but soon with my talent, persistence, drive and dedication he allowed me to step in the shoes of master painters.

Art is about dedication technique style and thought process is what the Atelier is about. Began painting figurative realism using various classical techniques and have been developing this style for several years. Developing a tighter and tighter depiction in painting of people. Still, at times, I go back to creating modern and landscape paintings. I always try to take my paintings one step above. My work has been shown in numerous exhibitions, resulting in recognition and sales. Continue to work finding galleries that like and show the type of work I create. I have worked to acquire a diversity of painting style and technique, so I can offer a greater range of art to the public. I teach classical techniques and color theory to students who have the commitment, talent and desire to create works of art.
